Port and Canadian Wine Award Winners!

BRRR! Let’s taste some Port!

Thursday, January 19th and Friday, January 20th

3 – 6pm

For those who missed out on our Port style wine tasting during Christmas, it is the perfect fireplace sipper!

No one knows exactly when port, as we know it, was created. The first wine from Oporto was really just red table wine. A story is told of a wine merchant in Liverpool, who in 1678, sent his sons to Portugal to find a wine source. In the Douro Valley they came upon a monastery in Lamego. The abbot was adding brandy to the wine during rather than after fermentation thereby producing a port-type wine. In any event, sometime during the end of the 1600’s or beginning of the 1700’s, someone came up with the idea of stopping the fermentation with brandy while the wine was still sweet, fruity, and strong.

Inniskillin Okanagan Estate Winery

Friday, January 13th and Saturday,  January 14th 3 – 6pm

In 1994, Inniskillin established an estate winery in the rich terroir of the Southern tip of the Okanagan Valley Wine Region in British Columbia. During their travels, Donald Ziraldo and Karl Kaiser had been actively promoting their Niagara Wines in the Western Canada market as well as watching the vineyard and winery developments in the Okanagan. They both had a strong desire to give Inniskillin a presence in the Okanagan and Kaiser was excited about the prospects of making wines there that would reflect its unique terroir. Commenced as a partnership between Inniskillin and the Inkameep indigenous peoples (Okanaqueen Tribe), the launch of Inniskillin Okanagan coincided with the 20th anniversary of Inniskillin’s first grape crush. Originally overseeing the winemaking from Niagara between trips to the Okanagan, Kaiser left the winemaking tasks to the capable Sandor Mayer in 1996 with the purchase of the current home of Inniskillin Okanagan Vineyards. Mayer was a natural as he developed the Dark Horse Estate Vineyard, combining his vineyard knowledge with his winemaking skills.

2008 Inniskillin Chenin Blanc

This 2008 Discovery Series Chenin Blanc displays generous aromas of honey and ripe honeydew. Crisp acidity is balanced with a rich texture and lingering flavours of pineapple, guava and apple.

2008 Inniskillin Dark Horse Pinot Blanc

Bright straw in color, the wine displays intense citrus and tropical fruit aromas. Apple and pear notes on the palate, mingled with crisp acidity make for a long finish.

2008 Inniskillin Pinotage

This 2008 Discovery Series Pinotage features cherry, raspberry and prune aromas with layers of toasted vanilla. A bouquet of ripe red fruit is accented with spice and firm tannins for a long structured finish.

2006 Inniskillin Petit Verdot

2006 Inniskillin Petit Verdot displays vivid currant and cherry aromas. Deep purple in colour, this wine has prune and black cherry flavours that are well balanced with firm tannins.

2009 Inniskillin Zinfandel

Intensive aromas of pomegranite, raspberries and licorice, finishing with cinnamon, black pepper and ripe red fruit.
